Clay Art Center
40 Beech Street
Port Chester, NY 10573
914-937-2047
A Place to Create, Connect, and Be Inspired
Clay Art Center in Port Chester, New York, is a nationally recognized 501c3 non-profit dedicated to the advancement and practice of ceramic art. Katherine Choy, a leader of the Newcomb pottery aesthetic, joined by master potter Henry Okamoto, founded the center as a communal studio in 1957. With Choy's untimely death in 1958, Okamoto pursued her legacy for the rest of his life. At one time a lone beacon of clay artistry on the East Coast, Clay Art Center became a haven for clay artists, many of whom pursued significant careers in ceramics and influenced contemporary ceramic practice.
Potter Elsbeth Woody and sculptor Claudia Miller succeeded Okamoto, further carving out a place on the artistic map by initiating the Summer Workshop Festival and opening a gallery dedicated to exhibiting ceramics.
Beginning in 1997, Director Reena Kashyap and Associate Director Ruth Berelson strengthened existing programs and focused on advancing the mission with classes, exhibits, community outreach, and resident artist programs. In 2007 Clay Art Center’s new non-profit status enabled it to benefit the wider local community with free children’s and adult workshops and programs.

Croton Point Park is a 508-acre park situated on a peninsula on the east shore of the Hudson River. This park offers year-round events and activities and has facilities for camping, hiking and swimming.
The park, rich in natural and human history, is also the site of historic wine cellars that are thought of be the oldest in New York State and the Croton Point Nature Center.
The oldest oyster shell middens on the North Atlantic Coast uncovered by archeologists on Croton Point confirm that the peninsula was inhabited by Native Americans as early as 7,000 years ago. Croton is in fact named for the Indian sachem, Kenoten, which means "wild wind.” In the 17th century, Indians of the Kitchawank tribe on the Wappinger Confederacy occupied a large fortified village on the high flat at the neck of Croton Point, which they called Navish. This was one of the most ancient and formidable Indian fortresses south of the Hudson Highlands. Continue reading about this park's history...

Peekskill, NY 10566

https://www.embarkpeekskill.org/
So many of us have been drawn to Peekskill for its lovely setting along the Hudson River, its diverse population and the growing arts scene. We are blessed with galleries, restaurants, the live/work artists’ lofts, interesting businesses and the Historic Paramount Theater, a large venue for big acts. The Paramount, built as a movie house, lacks many of the components of a traditional theater space.
Peekskill needs a place for local performing and literary artists - professional and emerging - to collaborate, create, teach and perform. An incubator for new works, a homebase for local artists. Help us continue to provide a place for community participation in the arts!
Our BIG VISION space consists of 2-3 theater spaces of differing sizes and configurations, rehearsal studios, set and costume shops & storage, writers’ rooms, practice rooms, event space, and administrative offices. We could also collaborate with entities such as Orange Splot and Peekskill Arts Alliance to create gallery and visual art teaching space.

https://parks.westchestergov.com/glen-island-park
This 105-acre island property is connected to New Rochelle by a drawbridge built in the 1920s. After Playland, Glen Island is the second most widely used park in the County Parks system. One of Westchester’s unique jewels, it was initially developed as a summer resort by John H. Starin. The original design exhibited the five cultures of the western world on individual islands linked together with piers and causeways. Today the islands have been merged with substantial fill areas totaling 130 acres and providing a beautiful crescent shaped beach with access to the Long Island Sound.
Glen Island Park also offers picnic pavilions, reservable and open picnic areas, boat launching, pathways, a catering hall and a restaurant, formerly Glen Island Casino of Big Band era fame. Cannons, sculptures and castles with coursed rubble stone, arched openings and round towers still remain from the days of John Starin’s resort. The castles, reminiscent of those in Germany's Rhineland, were constructed on their present site in the late 19th century for use as a beer garden and restaurant.

Harrison Players
see site for specific address
914-630-1089
https://www.harrisonplayers.org/
In 1963, Abner Kolberg, Leslie Ogden and Shirley Carparelli organized The Harrison Players, as a non-profit theatre group. The Recreation Department became their sponsor and The Harrison Players became an affiliate of the Town’s Recreation Department. The group continues to be grateful to the Recreation Department for all they do, including making rehearsal space available to them.
Back in 1963, the original Players decided to see if there was interest in a community theatre. They took out a small ad for a casting party at Risoli’s. To their delighted surprise, about fifty Harrisonites showed up, including Dottie Pustola and Anne Wurzberger, who were chartered members until they recently passed away. And so came “High Button Shoes”, a smash on Broadway and a super smash in Harrison. This led to many other big musicals, some with casts of 60 or more performers in their shows.
In addition to big musicals, such as “Fiddler” and “The Music Man”, their history also consists of dramas, mysteries, children’s shows, musical revues and comedies, such as their recent productions of “Plaza Suite” and "Who Killed Elvis?!". Their members include people from all occupations and auditions are open to everyone. Harrison Players also welcomes volunteers who would like to help backstage.

Hilltop Hanover Farm and Environmental Center
1271 Hanover Street
Yorktown Heights, NY 10598
914-862-5050
https://hilltophanoverfarm.org/
Hilltop Hanover Farm is a bucolic 400-year old historic working farm in Yorktown Heights, Westchester County New York. This farm and historic land is also in a critical environmental area of the Croton Watershed, which supplies drinking water to Westchester County and NYC.
From the 1930’s to the early 1990’s the farm was a prize-winning dairy farm, home to Guernsey and champion Holstein cattle. However, by 1991, the breeding program for Hilltop Hanover Holsteins ceased and the entire herd, 123 head was sold at auction. When the herd was sold, there was tremendous pressure to convert the land into a condominium complex. However; with strong support from local residents, the County of Westchester purchased the 187 acres of the original 250 acre farm and surrounding woodlands in 2003. The County’s mission was to provide watershed protection, protect open space and preserve the area’s agricultural heritage.
In 2011, the non-profit organization The Friends of Hilltop Hanover Farm and Environmental Center, Inc. a 501 (c) (3) was established. Today the Friends conducts the farming and educational programming, in a cooperative public-private partnership with the County of Westchester.
Today the farm is a regional education center that offers programs on healthy and sustainable food production and teaches skills for small-scale suburban and urban farming techniques, illustrating sustainable living practices for the region and local communities.
The farm features demonstration models for backyard farming, rainwater harvesting, composting, and greenroof technology. Visitors can hike the farm's 3.5 miles of woodland trails, picnic on the farm grounds, purchase our produce from our seasonal Farm Stand, or attend any of our numerous classes and workshops. Hilltop Hanover Farm offers tours, classes and field trips to school groups, garden clubs, and scout troops.

Since 1994, we have brought the lessons of the Holocaust, genocide and human rights crimes to more than 3,000 teachers, and through them have reached hundreds of thousands of middle and high school students.
Through our volunteer Educators’ Program Committee, the HHREC offers teachers the opportunity to plan professional development and to design curriculum for classroom use. These programs not only enrich teachers' knowledge about the Holocaust and related issues, but they also provide the lens through which to view all other human rights violations.

The planetarium at New Rochelle High School was completed in 1970 and Martin J. Steinbaum was appointed as its first director. Mr. Steinbaum retired in 1991. Under his direction, an annual holiday show, The Star of Bethlehem, was produced until 2002.
The present director of the planetarium is Mr. Bruce Zeller, who is also the astronomy teacher. There are several sections of astronomy which is offered as a junior and senior year science elective.
Each year many of New Rochelle’s elementary, pre-K, and middle school students visit the planetarium to learn about astronomy. In addition, New Rochelle HS students studying earth science supplement the astronomy section of the NYS syllabus with demonstrations and presentations in the planetarium. The facility is also available to private schools and scouting organizations.
Mr. Zeller also offers a monthly planetarium show, open to the public. There is no charge and reservations are not required. In December, The Season of Light holiday show is offered on several dates prior to the vacation. This is the 46th year of this show, shown in some form or another, in the New Rochelle High School Planetarium.
In 1996, the district upgraded the original Spitz planetarium projector to an A5 opto-mechanical star projector, along with an ATM-3 automation system. In 2005, the district installed a Spitz Scidome, a 360 degree full dome video projector, along with ATM-4 automation with a 5.1 surround sound audio system. More recently, the interior of the planetarium was refurbished, increasing the seating capacity to 84. Our favorite 2008 upgrade was the installation of red, blue and green LED lighting, to create all sorts of effects such as sunrises and sunsets!
New Rochelle Opera

914-576-0365
https://nropera.org/
New Rochelle Opera, Inc. developed from an invitation to Camille Coppola, a vocalist from New Rochelle with a background in opera, to present a lecture on opera to students of the Immaculate Conception School in Tuckahoe, NY. Later presentations at other local schools followed. In order to add live performance to the lectures, Ms. Coppola enlisted several other professional singers and a piano accompanist to the program. The aim was to introduce and educate young people to the world of opera.
Billie Tucker, working at that time as Community Relations and Cultural Coordinator at the New Rochelle Public Library, was impressed with Camille’s knowledge and presentation. Mrs. Tucker being a lover of opera herself, it wasn’t long before Billie invited Camille to present opera highlights from La Boheme at the Library. The success of that program in the Spring of 1982 prompted a staging of highlights from Madama Butterfly in the Fall of that same year. In 1983, a production of I Pagliacci was mounted with a piano accompanying a small chorus. Ms. Coppola not only directed these presentations, but sang the leading roles as well.

https://parks.westchestergov.com/sprain-ridge-park
The park’s 278 acres include two picnic areas. The remainder of the park is heavily wooded, with a variety of hiking and mountain bike trails.
Sprain Ridge Park is named for its location on a ridge between the northbound and southbound lanes of the Sprain Brook Parkway. There are several theories as to the origin of the name “Sprain.” It appears in the Greenburgh town records as early as 1743. Some think it is a corruption of the Indian title, “Armenperal” or “Armonsperahin.” Others say it refers to “spraints,” a word for otter dung, as there used to be many otters in the area. Also, to “sprain” is to sow seeds by hand, and possibly the grass around Grassy Sprain had been hand sown.
This land was acquired by the county in 1965 from the Boyce Thompson Institute, a botanical research center. It therefore houses many unusual and exotic woodland plants. The Thompsons were an old Yonkers family that made its fortune in mining.

The 1885 Music Hall, listed on the National Register for Historic Places, is owned, operated, and loved by The Friends of the Mozartina Musical Arts Conservatory, Inc, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, cultural and educational organization established in 1979. Our mission is three-fold: to present diverse and relevant programming in music, theater, dance, and film for the enrichment of the tri-state community; to promote arts education through classes, partnerships, performing opportunities, and residencies; and to preserve and restore the historic Music Hall so that it may continue to be a vibrant performing arts center and catalyst for sustainable economic development in our area.
The 843-seat theater was rescued from the wrecking ball on Valentine’s Day 1980 by our organization and specifically by board members Helen and Berthold Ringeisen, a pianist and language professor respectively, who, believing the arts were important for the community, riskily placed their home and business up as collateral so that the building could be purchased and renovated. Together with other arts enthusiasts, they operated the theater on a volunteer basis for 23 years. Today, the Music Hall is a cultural destination and one of the busiest theaters in the area, offering the best in music theater, dance, film and education and attracting over 100,000 people, including 25,000 children, from all over the tri-state area annually. As an economic engine for the region, the Music Hall pumps over $6.8 million into the local economy every year through visitor-related spending, according the Arts and Economic Calculator.

All of our ice cream is made from a specialty mix of milk and cream from Hudson Valley Fresh (free from steriods/antibiotics, high fructose corn syrup, and gums). Hudson Valley Fresh is a not-for-profit dairy cooperative formed in 1998 to preserve nine family-owned farms in Duchess and Columbia Counties. Dedicated to quality, sustainability, and local production, Hudson Valley Fresh is the only dairy source I would ever consider for our ice cream!
When I first bought the Blue Pig in 2010, I decided that local dairy, fresh produce, and environmentally-friendly practices were my top priorities. I chose Hudson Valley Fresh as my dairy source in conjunction with Boice Dairy for processing, unlike most ice cream stores which use factory-farm milk and ingredients from a can. As I like to say, “Your ice cream can only be as good as your milk.” Hudson Valley Fresh’s milk is 36 hours from pasture to dairy, which is how we know it’s the best tasting, the best for you, and the best for our local farmers!
The Capitol Theatre
149 Westchester Avenue
Port Chester, NY 10573

https://www.thecapitoltheatre.com/
The Capitol Theatre, designed by noted architect Thomas Lamb, opened on Wednesday, August 18, 1926 as a dignified playhouse with great decorative beauty and luxurious comfort. The open letter to Port Chester residents published in the newspaper that week boasted that it would contain “the only theater refrigerating system in Westchester County.” The grand opening, which included a performance of “The Star Spangled Banner” by a ten-piece orchestra and a showing of Sea Wolf, sold out all of its seats (then 2,000), and had to turn hundreds away.
People traveled from near and far to see shows at The Capitol. Hollywood kept the theater going for decades with films like Casablanca, Gone with the Wind and The Taming of the Shrew. Enthusiasts could pay as little as 5 cents to see a double-feature Sunday matinee.

Tibbets Brooks Park
355 Midland Avenue
Yonkers, NY 10704
914-231-2870
This beautiful park features an exciting aquatic complex with something to appeal to everyone. There’s a spray playground for kids of all ages, in-pool basketball and volleyball for some cool competition, lap lanes for getting in a daily swim workout, and of course, the signature “lazy river” that inspired the re-naming of this fabulous destination as “The Brook.”
But traditionalists take heart - the classic, Tudor-revival style bathhouse still stands majestically at the head of the center and the two pavilions at each end of the pool area have been restored to maintain the vintage look. Enjoy the view from our new in-pool benches or find a cool, shady spot under a tree.
Tibbetts Brook Park is one of the first parks developed by Westchester County. This 161-acre park offers many recreational activities throughout the year and hosts ethnic celebrations, fairs and festivals during the summer months.

Untermeyer Performing Arts Council
Untermyer Park

Yonkers, NY

https://www.untermyerperformingarts.org/
TThe Untermeyer Performing Arts Council was created in 1976 to bring free entertainment and music to the people of Yonkers in Untermyer Park.
Greystone, originally created by hat magnate John Waring, was purchased by one-time NY Governor and 1876 Presidential candidate Samuel Tilden. It later became the country home of Samuel and Minnie Untermyer, enthusiastic supporters of the arts. They often presented performances in their home, in the gardens and in the amphitheater.
The Untermyer Performing Arts Council is honored to continue their tradition. For more than 45 years we have delighted tens of thousands of Yonkers area residents with presentations on the Great Lawn of the park, adjacent to the now beautifully restored gardens. Our summer series takes place every Saturday evening at 6:30, from June through the Labor Day weekend, with a different offering each week.
In this charming setting overlooking the Hudson River, audiences have thrilled to the sounds of the symphony, the beat of Big Bands, the rhythms of rock and rap. They have enjoyed ballet, modern dance, and up-to-the-minute experimental troupes. They have laughed at a Shakespeare comedy, cried at an opera by Puccini. They have joined their neighbors to celebrate the music and dance of many of the ethnic groups that make up Yonkers’ diverse population.
VE Macy Park

This 172-acre park is centrally located in the county and a perfect spot for group picnics. Acquired in 1926, the park was originally called Woodlands Park, but was renamed for V. Everit Macy, the first Commissioner of Public Welfare. In fact, he was the first Westchester County Commissioner of any kind.
A scion of the wealthy Macy family, he first ran successfully on the Democratic ticket for Superintendent of the Poor for Westchester in 1914. Influenced by the infamous Republican William Boss Ward, Macy was re-elected on the Republican slate in 1920 and 1923. His title was then changed to Commissioner of Public Welfare, the first such post in New York State. He later served as chairman of the County Parks Commission.
V.E. Macy park is divided into three distinct areas. One section features ballfields, a playground, comfort stations and picnic pavilion. The Woodlands Lake section is an excellent spot for fishing and ice skating, provides access to the South County Trailway.
A section of the park has been renamed Great Hunger Memorial Park, which is home to a sculpture dedicated to the Irish people who fled their country to Westchester in the 1840s to escape poverty and famine.

Ward Pound Ridge Reservation
Route 35 and 121 South
Cross River, NY 10576

The 4,315-acre park makes Ward Pound Ridge Reservation the county’s largest park. With its varied terrain and landscapes and miles of wooded trails, the park provides a variety of activities in all seasons. There are areas for picnicking, lean-to camping, fishing and cross-country skiing.
Originally part of Cortlandt Manor, the reservation was settled by farmers from Connecticut. The name Pound Ridge is credited to the Indians who originally lived in the area. They had a local pound in which they kept game on the hoof until they needed it for food. The Indians built an enclosure of saplings driven into the ground and drove their game into the pound. The name was spelled “Poundridge” until 1938, when the county bought the property and added the “Ward” to honor William Lukens Ward, Westchester’s Republican county leader from 1896 to 1933. Want to preview some of the interesting sights to see when you visit the park? Our story map offers a tour of the highlights!
What does the reservation have in common with a 2015 film, Pearl Jam and the largest trail race east of the Mississippi? They were inspired by the Leatherman Legend.
