New Leader Troop Checklist

We're excited you've decided to become a Girl Scout troop leader!

Below you'll find a checklist to get you and your troop started.

#1: Join Girl Scouts in a Leadership Role toggle arrow

Become a Girl Scout Member. Enter your troop number when prompted to do so and select "leader" or "co-leader" as your role. You will be asked to pay the $30 membership fee.

**If you are already a registered Girl Scout, go to your Member Profile (under the My GS tab), click Add Role, and select "Troop Leader" or "Troop Co-Leader".

#2: Complete a Background Check toggle arrow

Within 24 hours of your registration, you will receive an e-mail from Asurint with instructions on how to complete your background check.

Background check cost starts at $6.25, additional fees may apply based on your address history. Additional fees are charged by certain counties to run a criminal search. GSHH wants to ensure everyone has the opportunity to volunteer and share in the GS experience!

#3: Complete Leader Training toggle arrow

NOTE: Before you can meet with your troop, the following training must be completed. You may choose to take this training as a live online webinar, or in-person. To take this training register through your member profile activity tab and select a training time and date. To complete the training online, follow the steps below:

Read the New Leader's Guide To Success to learn Girl Scouts Heart of the Hudson Policies and Guidelines.
Register for a Volunteer Essentials training.
Before you plan any activity with the girls check the Safety Activity Check Points

#4: Get a Troop Number toggle arrow

Contact our Member Care team online or call 1-855-232-GSHH (4744) and ask for a Community Engagement Specialist.

#5: Open a Troop Bank Account toggle arrow

Submit the Bank Account Request Form to GSHH Member Care at membercare@girlscoutshh.org.

Bank accounts must be opened no later than 30 days after creating a troop and receiving a troop number.

#6: Recruit Girls and Adults to your Troop! toggle arrow

Girls and their families can join your troop via the Troop Availability section of the website.

New Troops are open in the catalog to start with 12 girls. If you know you will have more girls joining your troop, let your GSHH Community Engagement Specialist know so that the space can be increased. Make sure new girls and adults have your five-digit troop number so they can register into your troop – please be sure to share it with them.

#7: Use the Volunteer Toolkit to plan awesome meetings toggle arrow

The Volunteer Toolkit (VTK) is an online resource that supports troop leaders and co-leaders, making running a troop easier and more convenient.
