Silver Award

Do Something Every Day that Improves the Lives of Those Around You

The Girl Scout Silver Award is the second highest award in Girl Scouting. It represents a girl’s accomplishment within Girl Scouting and her community as she works to improve not only her life, but the lives of all around her.

The Silver Award is for girls in 7th—8th grade. Under the new requirements, girls are asked to contribute 50 or more hours in a Take Action project that will improve some aspect of their community that they feel passionate about or where they feel they can inspire positive change. They are asked to use skills gained over the years, incorporate lessons gained from the journey they completed, and as always, take the Girl Scout Law and Promise to heart.  For more detailed information, please see the Girl Scout Silver Award Booklet and the Adult Guide to the Silver Award.

We offer informational Strive to Silver Workshops.  For upcoming dates click here.

The first step to earning the Silver Award is completing a Cadette-level journey.  This can be started as a 6th grader.

Each girl will need to select a Project Advisor for her project. A Project Advisor is any adult who has expertise in the area of the girl’s project. This person does not need to be a Girl Scout. For example, a girl who would like to do a soccer-based project could choose a soccer coach as a Project Advisor. Girl Scouts Heart of the Hudson requires that each girl identify a Silver Award Mentor to assist her through the process, as well. Council field staff members have the list of Silver Award Mentors and their contact information.

Before beginning their project, potential candidates should complete the Silver Award proposal, and get  it approved by a mentor.  Copies of the proposal should be submitted to Amanda Benton in the Poughkeepsie office.

Upon completion of the project, girls should complete the GSHH Girl Scout Silver Award Final Report and submit it to the Poughkeepsie Regional office or silveraward@girlscoutshh.org. A ceremony to honor Girl Scout Silver Award receipients is held each year in the fall.  To be eligible for this annual recognition ceremony, paperwork should be submitted by September 30th of that year.

For questions or more information, please contact our Girl Award hotline at (914) 747-3080, x 259 or (845) 452-1810 , x259 or silveraward@girlscoutshh.org
