Troop Availability Catalog FAQ

What is the Troop Availability Catalog?

The Opportunity Catalog is an online listing of troop openings for girls and volunteer opportunities for adults. When new members join, the catalog is updated in real time. If you stop or get stuck anywhere along the way, the system automatically sends you an email with helpful information.

How does the Troop Availability Catalog work?

The  Opportunity Catalog is easy to use!

First we determine the number of spots open in the troop or “girl vacancies.”  So, let’s say a troop’s desired number of girls is 14, and currently there are 10 girls in the troop. That means there are 4 girl vacancies in the troop.  Those four girl vacancies go on the  Opportunity Catalog so that a parent or caregiver who is looking for a troop can see that there is space in the troop and can then select that vacancy online in the  Opportunity Catalog.

What happens if I find a troop that works for my daughter?

Great question!

If you find a Troop that works for you, just click on “Join Today” .

The process will walk you though becoming a member, and selecting the appropriate troop and/or volunteer opportunity.

To make it easy for them to find your troop on the  Opportunity Catalog make sure they have the troop number.  NOTE: the Troop number needs 5 digits; add zeros in front if necessary,  and there is no space between the letters and numbers when they are looking for the troop (Ex: Troop12345).

After a new girl joins a Troop, the Troop Leader will automatically receive an email notification that will notify them to reach out and welcome the new Girl Scout to the Troop.

What is the optimum number of girls to be in a troop?

The answer is a minimum of twelve girls for everyone to have the best Girl Scout Experience.  A minimum of twelve is an ideal number for multiple reasons:

  • Ideal for group activities, learning, and group dynamics
  • Helps with natural ebb and flow of attendance at troop meetings
  • Group can be broken into small groups based on girls' likes and interests and/or skill level
  • More girls means more adults that can support the troop and share responsibilities
  • More girls means more fun!
