Volunteers and Training

Volunteers are the “difference makers” within communities and in the lives of girls. We depend on people like yourself to help keep the spirit of the Girl Scouts soaring to reach the stars, helping to conquer goals and create new dreams.

We recognize our volunteers who are making a difference in the lives of girls and impacting the work of Girl Scouts throughout the lower Hudson Valley.  We celebrated the accomplishments of some wonderful volunteers at our first GSHH Annual Meeting on April 29. Maybe next year we'll be honoring you!

EVERYTHING COVERED - September 12 - 14, 2008

Girl Scouts Heart of the Hudson - Rock Hill Camp, Mahopac, Putnam County

Please join us for ETC 2008 – This is a volunteer-coordinated weekend at Rock Hill Camp.  This is YOUR opportunity to learn new skills, develop new talents, and discover a huge network of Girl Scout friends and resources.  Join us for the day or the weekend.  If you’ve only experienced ETC through the eyes of a “day” participant, stay the weekend this year and enjoy ETC at its best.  Our caterers will dazzle you with their culinary skills.  Evening entertainment on Friday and Saturday will keep you smiling!  Donate an item, new or homemade for our 1st ETC Silent Auction.  Proceeds will go towards next year’s ETC entertainment and workshops.  Bring your own travel mug for the “round the clock” coffee and tea and water, which is always available in the dining hall.

Choose courses that are right for you from the wide variety of offerings listed in this packet.  Courses are available for every range of interest:  indoors or outdoors, for the crafty and the klutzy, from Daisy to adult, all taught by fabulous volunteers.  Workshop chairs have been planning hard all winter to put together this dazzling assortment of sessions!

Capacity for the weekend is limited to 230 people, and sessions fill up fast.   Please register ASAP to get your first selections, and be sure to include your second and third choices for each time slot.  If your first choice is not available and you do not list alternatives, you will have a free period to explore the beauty of Rock Hill.

Simply complete the Registration Form and the Adult Medical History Form (both included in this packet) and mail the Registration Form, along with a self-addressed stamped envelope and your check made payable to “GSHH”, to the Pleasantville regional office:   GSHH, Attn: Christine Paese, 2 Great Oak Lane, Pleasantville, NY  10570.   Registration begins May 1, 2008 and ends on July 1, 2008.  Sorry, no phone registrations are accepted.  Registration confirmations will be mailed to you by mid-August. If you need special accommodations, please let us know and we will be happy to arrange them.

We invite you to join the dynamic group of volunteers and welcome your ideas and abilities. After all, we have the challenge before us to create, to change, to choose, to collaborate, and to celebrate.

We encourage you to become a trained Girl Scout volunteer: we offer many different opportunities that match your time, your interests and skills, and your experience.  One-time volunteer opportunities are available, as well as short-term commitments - and, of course, we are always looking for volunteers who want to become Girl Scout Leaders!  Because of Girl Scout volunteers, we continue to expand the great opportunities we provide for the girls in the Hudson Valley.

If you wish to work directly with girls, we require an application form, including references; consent for background screening is also required.

Training

In order to provide a quality program for girls and encourage greater leader satisfaction, the Board of Directors of Girl Scouts Heart of the Hudson has approved the following training standard:

  • All new leaders must take the Orientation course before attending a Basic New Leader training course. This Orientation is a PREREQUISITE to any other course. It is given in the leader's community by a member of the Service Team or the Field Executive.
  • All new leaders must register and attend Basic New Leader training and the appropriate age level training (Daisy, Brownie, Junior, Studio 2B) within two months of appointment. Each session is two and one-half hours long.
  • All leaders changing levels are required to complete the appropriate training for the new level as soon as possible.
