 Service Ideas
Service is an integral part of the Girl Scout program, it is inherent in the Promise and Law. It is performed to better the quality of life of others. Service is given without the expectation of reward. All Girl Scouts should take part in service activities or projects.
Service is inherent in the Promise and Law and is given without expectation of payment or reward. All Girl Scouts should take part in service activities or projects.
Standard Guidelines:
1. Service activities or projects are based on the interests of the girls and the needs of the community.
2. Councils provide support to girls and leaders in identifying community needs, locating resources and planning service projects.
3. Awards are not provided solely for hours of services, because service is inherent in the Promise and Law. However, girls may be recognized for special training and skill development, and some form of written documentation the service rendered may be given to girls for their records.
Progression: Leaders should always keep progression in mind when deciding on a service project with the girls. For example : Daisies and Brownies can make tray favors for a nursing home. Juniors would take the tray favors to the nursing home. Studio 2B/ Cadettes would go a step further and have a more personal contact with the patients like doing the nails of the female patients. Studio 2B/ Cadettes and Seniors can work on coming up with projects to meet their respective challenges.
Money: Girl Scouts cannot raise money for any other organization or cause, no matter how worthy. This is National Policy and we cannot deviate from this. Troops, however, can donate troop money to an organization or cause of their preference. Note: Leaders should keep in mind that while dollar donations to a worthy cause is a positive thing, it should not take the place of service. The actual effort made and/or the personal contact with others is the thing the girls will remember the most and will benefit from the most. |
