If You Can Dream It, You Can Do It

Hey girls! Have a specialized interest or passion? Looking for a special event to attend? You’ve come the right place! GSHH offers multiple clubs and activities you can participate in throughout the year, as well as a variety of special activities. This way, you can focus on what is important and what sounds the most interesting to you — and you don’t have to be a member of a troop to do so!

GSHH offers a hands-on program in robotics, a talented song choir, and a competitive canoe team.  We also have some pretty special days coming up just for you!

TECHNO TEAMS

Girl Scouts Heart of the Hudson is represented by six robotics teams of varying ages.

1) The Techo Girls is for high schoolers and they practice in Westchester. They often win awards and accolades, including at this past year’s FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) competitions.

2) The Techno Chix is for 4th—8th graders. They also practice in Westchester. They recently won the Inspire Award at a regional competition and advanced to the World Championship in Atlanta, GA.

3) Techno Chicklets team is for the youngest girls in Westchester and has girls in kindergarten through 3rd grade.

4) The Tiny Techs is our other K—3rd grade team and they practice in Dutchess County.

5) The Robotiques is comprised of  4th – 8th graders and they practice in Orange County!

6) The Attitechs are also made up of 4th through 8th graders and  practice in Dutchess .

All teams are open to all Girl Scouts, even those who are not part of a troop! Girls who are not yet registered, but interested in the robotics program,  are also encouraged to come out and join the team.  If you’re looking for more information, please email mdiamanti@girscoutshh.org

DOTTED HALF-NOTES

The Dotted Half Notes are a choir made up of Girl Scouts of all ages. This highly successful girls’ chorus is dedicated to brightening the world with the beauty of the human voice.

What began as a Gold Award project about five years ago, has since turned into a very successful singing group. In 2011, the 25-member chorus took first place with an “Excellent” rating at the Six Flags Music in the Park Festival in Agawam, MA.

The group practices once a month on Sunday afternoons from 3–5 p.m. at Rock Hill Camp in Mahopac.  They perform at a number of holiday celebrations, GSHH events, and nursing homes throughout the year. This fall, they were among the performers at the October 15 event launching our year-long celebration of Girl Scouting’s 100th Anniversary.

They are always welcoming new members, so if singing is something you’re passionate about, or a new activity you’ve always wanted to try, the Dotted Half Notes are waiting for you.  You must be a registered Girl Scout to participate, and you can easily join now !

KAMIKAZE KANOERS

The Kamikaze Kanoers are a Girl Scout canoe racing team that practices and competes annually in April and May.  They have represented area Girl Scouts in the Governor Clinton Canoe Regatta for over 25 years. They are comprised of 7th through 12th grade girls who want to learn the fundamentals of canoeing and look forward to competing on the water.

Their new season will begin with an orientation meeting on March 14, 2012, from 7–9 p.m. at the New City Regional Office’s training center. Practice and training is at Camp Addisone Boyce on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 4–6:30 p.m., beginning the last week in March and continuing until the Memorial Day weekend regatta. A river training weekend on the Delaware River will be scheduled in May.

They don’t need to be a Girl Scout to join, but you must become a Girl Scout member and join Troop 40096 to participate.

The program costs $15, plus $15 for team dues. You must be a registered Girl Scout, and can easily register now ! The uniform is a white hooded zippered sweatshirt, T-shirt, red shorts and long pants. Other costs include the river training trip weekend in May and minimal camping and meal fees for the race weekend.

The training concludes after the race with the American Red Cross Canoe Certification class called Fundamentals of Canoeing (FOC). For the 2012 season, the orientation is Wednesday, May 30, and the course is Saturday and Sunday, June 9 and 10.

Team registration packets will be available at the March 14 informational meeting, sign up for the Info meeting today.
